Not to mention the valuable tips and techniques that are available on the Cakewalk blog and their Youtube channel. But right out of the box, Sonar X3 studio and. Sonar is probably NOT your best option. Having said that, here are 2 things I like about Sonar: The X3 and Studio versions are insanely affordable. Despite the loss of version numbers, Sonar continues to come in three levels, now called Sonar Artist, Sonar Professional, and Sonar Platinum. As a general rule, the interface and core features are the same in all three versions, with the key difference being the number of plug-ins, instruments, and goodies. We reviewed Sonar Platinum and got to see three update packages.As many software companies are introducing subscription models, Cakewalk has opted for what it calls a membership structure. The key difference is that with Sonar, whether you buy, upgrade, or pay monthly, you end up with a permanent license; in other words, it’s not a rental. You could think of it as simply a 12-month installment plan to purchase Sonar accompanied by a year of updates. For those new to Sonar, pricing ranges from $9.99 per month (or $99 outright) to $49.99 per month (or $499 outright). Renewal pricing (Cakewalk’s way of saying annual upgrade) is 50 to 60 percent less than a new purchase.

Whether you purchase, use the payment plan, or select renewal, you get 12 months of updates, new features, fixes, and bonus content. ACTING ON IMPULSEREmatrix Solo is a single-IR version of OverLoud’s innovative convolution reverb that allows you to combine up to five different IRs. If you were a fan of PerfectSpace and wondered when Sonar would include a 64-bit convolution reverb, REmatrix Solo is your answer. Its operation is straightforward, and it includes a wide variety of IRs and presets: What more could you ask for? You can adjust decay time, pre-delay, and stereo width, and a 1-band EQ lets you finetune the reverb’s character.

You can import your own impulse responses as WAV or AIFF files, although for some reason these are all stored in one big file, which makes managing your IR collection more difficult than it ought to be.Fig. REmatrix Solo is a very good convolution reverb that would benefit from a larger and more informative interface. In the February Sonar update, Cakewalk included more than a hundred new impulse responses from “a legendary NYC studio.” This release simultaneously demonstrates an advantage of Sonar’s new membership program and a disadvantage of integrating REmatrix Solo into the ProChannel. Obviously, having your DAW manufacturer add value to your product on a monthly basis is nice, and these rooms can add character to any track you recorded in a too-dry vocal booth or closet.

However, the limited space available within the ProChannel interface means sorting through 126 files from a drop-down list (see Figure 1), which is challenging, to say the least. It would be great if the interface had room for a searchable browser, the ability to arrange user IRs in submenus, or at least a descriptive metadata that showed up in the IR display.

Some disparate elements of the user interface remain. Skylight UI really needs a 1080p screen to come into its own. Addictive Drums plug-in isn't mapped to General MIDI keys. Still no Mac version.

Bottom LineCakewalk SONAR X3 Producer continues to deliver oodles of power for not that much money, and aside from some persistent UI quirks, this latest version is the best one yet.Even with the above upgrades, our favorite feature in SONAR X3 Producer, though, remains ProChannel. If you're new to SONAR, ProChannel models a high-end mixing console, and exists for every single audio and instrument track in your project. Essentially, it adds channel and bus compression, musical EQ, drag and drop routing options, a highly customizable tube stage, and plenty of visual cues to aid you in its operation. Under the hood, it offers 64-bit double-precision resolution and works natively in 64-bit Windows 8.1.ProChannel is completely modular; you can set up the chain however you want.

And thankfully, you no longer need to spend extra money on ProChannel to gets its modularity and Softube saturation knob. That said, you can also buy additional ProChannel modules, either separately or as part of a $179 bundle. You can employ S-type (SSL), N-Type (Neve), and A-Type (Trident) console emulation, while the PC76 compressor models the legendary Urei 1176's FET design.

There's a new tape emulator module that adds some of that overdriven analog quality you'd get when recording to reel-to-reel. My favorite new feature here is QuadCurve EQ Zoom, which pulls out of ProChannel into a beautifully editable EQ curve panel, complete with spectrum analyzer. Skylight Interface UpdatesSONAR X3's revamped Skylight interface contains over 100 interface tweaks; there's way too much to go into here, so I'll touch on the most important ones. As a whole, Skylight remains a gem, as it combines some of the best elements from Logic, Pro Tools, and Cubase, and puts them together in a refreshingly simple layout. This program begs for a 1080p (1,920-by-1080-pixel) touch screen, which makes SONAR X3 downright pleasurable to work in; it's a lot more cramped on, say, a 1,366-by-768-pixel laptop display. All major DAWs, including Pro Tools, Logic, and Cubase, are easier to use at higher screen resolutions, but none seem to require one quite the way SONAR X3 does.As before, the Control Bar at the top contains oversized track control buttons and easy access to the metronome, recording resolution, tempo, and meter.

You can expand the control bar to add sections for loop recording, editing, and other features, and you can set the bar to float as well as stay affixed to the top. You can drag and drop the various Control Bar sections around, and new for SONAR X3, you can publish a clip straight to YouTube. Cakewalk also improved the Control Bar's Smart Tools; for example, you can highlight an audio clip, click near the top header, and drag it left or right—or down, in which case the system creates a new track automatically. You can hold down CTRL and it will double the clip as well.The home screen lets you arrange just about any combination of the track view, track inspector, score view, piano roll, and event list, and lock it so that everything is on one screen, similar to the way Logic Pro works on the Mac. Four shortcut keys (C, D, B, and I) toggle the four main elements on the display on and off. As before, you can create extra screen sets, letting you arrange the various interface elements, windows, and plug-ins across multiple monitors, and then calling up each one with the corresponding numeric key.The mix window looks largely the same as before, with one big addition: You can now create custom track and bus colors, which will then follow through as you reroute tracks to different busses automatically.

This simple change is a huge boon to workflow, and a good antidote for anyone tired of the overwhelming dark gray most DAW programs sport these days.Aside from the keyboard shortcuts, I'm still fond of track templates and FX Chains, which let you string together favorite plug-in and effect combinations that you can then call up with a single click—much in the same way Logic's old Channel Strip presets worked. (Logic Pro X has since ditched Channel Strips for Patches, which now allow you to combine multiple tracks into a single patch, something you still can't do with Sonar X3. Either way, Pro Tools lacks these facilities.) You can drag and drop almost anything, including audio clips, drum patterns, virtual instruments, and track templates, and then drag out and assign up to six smart controls that can then be automated, which is incredibly powerful.
